I have started adding complete episode summaries, starting with Season One. I have all seven seasons on DVD, and I want to work with fellow fans of the series to make this the definitive reference page for all things related to The West Wing.

The ideal format for every episode should be, in my (and other's) opinion, as follows: Teaser--Act One--Act Two--Act Three--Act Four (Epilogue optional)--cast--Trivia--Goofs--Quotes--references.

Try to include pictures as much as you can. There is a fine collection of screencaps at screenmusings. All of the images are free to use. If you make a change to a page that involves merely correcting a typo or something similar, please make sure to check the minor edit box before saving!

Please remember that, as far as I know, no one who contributes makes any money off this site. This is all fan-created content and updates on this site are done voluntarily. Try to keep that in mind before refusing the help of anyone! ERJ1024 03:55, 24 April 2009 (UTC)

It is also important to remember that the West Wing universe exists totally outside the "real world" universe. Please keep this in mind when pointing out minor goofs, like the names of nations that really exist or practices and procedures carried out in the real world.

It seems this place has been devoid of any activity for a while now. I'm going to start going through articles, write new ones. I am one of the founders at Wiki 24 and want to get involved here. Copying from Wikipedia?Edit

Should we really just copy all the material Wikipedia has on this series. A perfect example is Toby Ziegler. That article, and several more, has been copied right off - including the false wikilinks) If we're just copying, what is our purpose here? I think we should establish some ground rules here. What do you say about it? I'm asking you all, but especially the ones in charge here. Other articles: Leo McGarry, Donna Moss, Abigail Bartlet, Josiah Bartlet, Josh Lyman, just to menion a few... Personally, I think it's a great place to start, but it's up to us to make it even MORE in depth. Also, this should not surprise you to learn, but I was the one who copied those articles into this site, but... in addition to that, I played a huge hand in writing the majority of those articles for wikipedia, so...

I would just like to say that if you are going to copy from wikipedia, please take out the useless links within the article that have nothing to do with the show and its characters. Thanks.

It's also good practice to add a wikipedia template. Acknowledgement is part of the conditions of the GFDL, so just copying without credit is outside the license terms. We should do it right, because we want other people to do it right with our content! The easiest way to do this is to add: {{Wikia:Wikipedia|article name}}. That will expand to:

Use this on pages which directly use Wikipedia content.

I was having a little trouble with the links on the Wikipedia template. Could someone else have a look at it and make sure that I am not crazy? The article I was editing was Chief of Staff and I ended up hard coding it because the history page link was not working.--Scully6x03 04:06, 10 July 2006 (UTC)

Episode page titlesEdit

Currently the episodes can be found as number sequences (for example 114 referring to season 1, episode 14, named 'Take This Sabbath Day'). Like on other series wikis (example: Battlestar Wiki) I tend to use the search box and enter (part of) the episode title when I want to look up something, and when I look for the series title, '114' shows up as the very last in the results page. As I don't admin any series wikis myself I don't have statistics to support this, but I suspect this is how most people would look up episodes when using 'search'. I suggest renaming all series episodes pages to their actual titles.

I have started the process of adding the episode titles. I am not deleting the number for the episodes, I am making those redirects to the episode titles. It is going very slow and my goal is to have seasons 5, 6 and 7 formatted correctly and redirected in the next two weeks. --Scully6x03 02:33, 11 July 2006 (UTC)

I'd turn it around tbh - after all the title is the one at the top of the article.
The three digit format ('101') is just one way of lining up episodes, other examples would be '1x01' and 's01e01', another reason not to just pick one but use the full title instead. Should the need arise we can make redirects for all those formats. i.e. 1x18 -> Six Meetings Before Lunch, as well as s01e18 -> Six Meetings Before Lunch

How Episodes Should Look and FeelEdit

I like the way you've written the story, but it does seem to have a rather excessive length. Maybe the focus should be on more major plot changes within the episode articles.
The question I'm asking myself is what the goal of a (this) series wiki is. I suppose part of it is an episode guide, but what I personally like to use it for is background info and story arcs that unfold over many episodes. What I'm thinking of is more of a focus on articles with titles like 'Bartlet's Re-election', 'The India - Pakistan conflict' and 'The Santos Campaign' next to the style of article you've written for 'Tomorrow' but applied to persons. Sort of a glimpse into the West Wing universe from a topic point of view instead of the 'windows' that the episodes are. I must admit I'm suggesting something that will take a lot of time, something which I personally don't have, but it will result in something that makes people come back again and again for more, the same way does. -- MiG 15:18, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

This sort of falls into the POV discussion a little bit as well. How much detail should go into to episode pages and how much into the ‘concept’ pages (e.g. 'The Santos Campaign')? I’ve been visiting other wiki for ideas and the one that seems to be the closest to look and feel for episodes seems to be [24]. I would think that the character pages should as culmination of all episodes, one stop shopping for those that write fanfic or want to learn about a specific person more. Should we treat each article like the show is ongoing, or should this be more of a reference guide or companion history of the show? It's really a spoiler issue, something you see with series that air different seasons in different countries. I reckon the best way to approach this would be to consider this wiki as that companion historical guide you mentioned. In other words, write it from the perspective of the end of season 7. Think of the LostPedia [[1]] which I usually browse in for a bit after an episode. If I haven't watched the latest episode you won't find me browsing it (spoilers obviously take away much of the fun of Lost), and considering TWW has ended this should make a decision about this easier. -- MiG 19:46, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

Might be a good idea to write articles chronologically though - so people can stop reading when they arrive at unknown territory. Which makes me wonder what the best way would be to write about someone who died in the series (Fitzwallace for example). Starting with 'was' gives away he's going to die at some point, and talking about him in the present tense makes ending with 'he was killed by...' etc etc a bit odd. -- MiG 19:46, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

My suggestion is that characters be detailed as they were at the end of Season Seven, dead or alive. I first came across this Wiki looking for historical information on the characters to write stories; that is where my bias is. I dislike having to just between four or five websites to determine simple facts. --Scully6x03 17:39, 4 August 2006 (UTC)

Categorization and POVEdit

I find it hard to categorize some as "Primary Characters" or "Secondary Characters" as this is not always certain and doesn't fit with a wiki of this types' POV (which I will discuss). The categories I would like to see would be:

  • Republicans : for all Republicans (like Ainsley and Lassiter)
  • Democrats : for all Democrats (like Bartlet and Amy and Josh)
  • Senators : for current and former members of the Senate (like Hoynes and Vinick)
  • Representatives : for current and former members of the House of Reps (like Bartlet and Santos)
  • Presidents or Presidents of the United States : for Presidents of the United States (like Santos and Bartlet and Lassiter and Truman)
  • Ambassadors : for Ambassadors to and from the United States (like Marburry and Kassenbach)
  • Governors : for State Governors (like Baker and Bartlet and Ritchie)
  • ...and possibly more (maybe Supreme Court Justices, Cabinet Secretaries, or an overhead "Politicians" category)

About the P.O.V., I think that this Wiki should adopt a POV similar to the top Wikis of this type (this type being a Fictional world's Encyclopedia). The top ones are Memory Alpha and "Wookieepedia," which adopt an in-universe POV to their worlds. The way this works is it separates from Wikipedia (which I don't think we should take info from directly) by placing the "writers" within the universe. So we would write an article as if Bartlet and Josh and Sam and Leo were real political figures. I feel we can place ourselves around year 2007/2009 so we can write about the Bartlet administration as recent history. There are a lot of details we don't know that we should be vague instead of stating "it is unknown" or "we don't know."

Episodes, Performers, writers, and the like can still be in a real-world point-of-view, but real-world people mentioned on the show should probably be listed in an "in-universe" way (Eisenhower and Bartlet existing in the same universe).--Tim Thomason 18:31, 26 July 2006 (UTC)

Tim, you make some great points. I've been snooping around other wikis trying to glean ideas for ideas on formats, logos and other things. Perhaps, in the spirit of the 24 Wiki, we should have just a general Characters page and then have the categories that you suggested as subcategories?
As for POV ~ I’m torn. I like the idea that we should write like we are in the world, but the challenge with that is unlike Star Wars, there is no future development in this universe. We have no books or comics or spin-off series to perpetuate this like a living breathing thing. Let me dwell on that a bit and please feel free to tell me more about the idea.--Scully6x03 21:03, 26 July 2006 (UTC)
There's no reason why we can't use both types of category simultaneously. We wish to describe the people and events in the West Wing Universe, and one way of doing this is by writing episode synopses which obviously can't be considered to be 'in character'. Yet this is the main point of entry if you will, into that universe. I consider this primary character - secondary character categorisation to be an easy way for people who haven't seen the series for a while, to find their way back around the WW universe.
I do agree though, that the writing style of the articles (people, events) would benefit from using an in-universe POV, making it much more accessible. I'm distinguishing between the body text and the infobox btw - body text would be in-universe, infobox would focus on categorisation both in-universe and from a television series POV.
One thing I've noticed so far, and that's a lack of crossreferencing within present texts. If you refer to something that happened in an earlier episode there should be a link, the same way you would cite your source on wikipedia. In fact, maybe we should start using footnotes as not to disturb that in-universe style of writing. What do you reckon? -- MiG 12:01, 11 August 2006 (UTC)
