Thomas Jefferson (died July 4, 1826) was President of the United States during the early 19th century.

Jefferson once said, "We must not be afraid to follow the truth wherever it may lead."[1]

He often feuded with John Adams when they were both ministers in France.[2]

In his inauguration speech, Jefferson said "Peace, commerce, honest friendship with all nations and entangling alliances with none."[3]

He swore the oath of office on the Jefferson Bible, which may or may not warp.[4]

Charlie Young once said, possibly in jest, that his great-great grandfather may have been Thomas Jefferson.[5]

Jefferson died on the same day as his political rival, John Adams, on Independence Day, 1826. Jefferson died a few hours before Adams, but Adams last words were "Jefferson lives."[6]

Jefferson famously wrote the Declaration of Independence in 1776.

  1. According to Ellie Bartlet in Eppur Si Muove
  2. "Two great giants dying on their country's birthday, after years of friendship and feuding. As diplomats in Paris..." from Jefferson Lives
  3. "In the last two minutes, three people have reminded me what Jefferson said in his Inaugural." from Inauguration (Part I)
  4. "The Jefferson bible doesn't warp?" from Inauguration (Part I)
  5. "Well, they think it's possible my great, great grandfather is Thomas Jefferson." from Privateers
  6. "Oh, my dad loves 4th of July stuff, like Jefferson and Adams dying on the same day." from Jefferson Lives
