| Associate Justice of the Supreme Court|
1972 – 1992
Chief Justice of the Supreme Court
|Successor||Evelyn Baker Lang|
- He was played by Irish actor Milo O'Shea.
Biographical information Edit
He was a very liberal judge, and known for his extensive debates with conservative Justice Brady. Ashland was quite old by the time the Bartlet administration came into office. The White House noticed that he was furtively writing parts of his decisions in poetic verse, leaving the administration wondering what might be going on in his mind. ("Inauguration (Part I)")
Despite suffering from health problems, he refused to give up his seat on the court for several years, fearing that President Josiah Bartlet would not be able (for political reasons) to nominate a worthy successor. ("Separation of Powers") However, when Evelyn Baker Lang had a good chance of being confirmed as long as another free seat on the court was given to conservative Christopher Mulready, Ashland agreed to step down and pave the way for Lang's nomination.
