General Nicholas Dwight Alexander (February 20, 1948-present) is a fictional character played by Terry O'Quinn on the television serial drama The West Wing. He served as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 2003 to 2007.
Alexander was born in Baldwin, Florida to Ralph and Helen Alexander. Ralph Alexander served in the U.S. Marine Corps during WW2 and served in the corps until his retirment in 1980. Nicholas Alexander was a All-State-Defense Tackle in high school before being accepted into West Point in 1966.
Alexander served several tours in Vietnam with distinction. Alexander served in various posts in the 70s, 80s and early 90s. In 1997, Alexander became commander of US Army Pacific, and in 1998 the first army general to command US Pacific Command. in 1999, Alexander became Chief of Staff of the US Army. In 2001, Alexander was appointed to be Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. In 2003, Alexander became Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and served two 2-year terms.
Alexander married his first wife Julia in 1967 and they had a son Matthew. Alexander and Julia divorced in 1981. Alexander married his second wife Ruth in 1986 and they have a son Brandon.
