Jack Buckland

Jack Buckland was the Democratic US Secretary of Labor under President Josiah Bartlet from 2002 to 2007. He was the former Governor of Indiana. Buckland would have challenged Bartlet in the 2002 Presidential primaries but he was talked down by Josh Lyman. He succeeded Carl Reid.

Buckland was born in Terre Haute, Indiana in 1948. He is a 1970 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, where he won the Heisman Trophy in 1970.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1970 to 1978. He completed two tours of duty in Vietnam.

From 1978 to 1980, he served on the staff of U.S. Senator Birch Bayh, Democrati of Indiana.

He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1980, and was re-elected in 1982.

He was elected Governor of Indiana in 1984 and was re-elected in 1988. he did not seek re-election in 1992, but returned to win again in 1996 and 2000.

Was on the final shortlist of candidates as Bartlet's running mate in 1998, but lost out to John Hoynes.

His popularity in Indiana and the mid-west helped Bartlet win during the 1998 Presidential Election.

In 2002, President Bartlet appointed him to serve as the Secretary of Labor.
